Lex Luthor, created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, first appeared in *Action Comics* #23 (April 1940). He is one of Superman's most iconic and persistent adversaries. A brilliant scientist, inventor, and businessman, Luthor views Superman as an obstacle to human progress and his own ambitions.
